When Evelyn and Walter Haas, Jr. created this foundation in 1953, they were motivated by a set of values that still guide the Foundation today. With their vision of a just and caring society as our touchstone, the Evelyn and Walter Haas, Jr. Fund supports initiatives and organizations that advance and protect fundamental rights and opportunities for all.
Giving primarily in San Francisco and Alameda counties, CA. No support for private foundations, consumer or professional groups, labor or trade associations, research centers, or religious organizations. No grants to individuals, or for deficit or emergency financing, workshops, major equipment, scholarships, direct mail campaigns, fundraising events, annual appeals, conferences, publications, capital or endowment campaigns, films or videos, or basic research.
Because of significant commitments to current grantees and the uncertainty in the markets, the Fund has limited resources for new grantees and is temporarily accepting grant proposals on an invitation-only basis. Please contact the foundation directly to inquire about an invitation.
Award amounts vary by proposal. Recent grants have ranged from approximately $50,000 to more than $200,000.
