    Summary

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) is a federally assisted meal program operating in public, nonprofit private schools, and residential child care institutions. It provides nutritionally balanced, low-cost, or free lunches to children each school day. The program was established under the National School Lunch Act, signed by President Harry Truman in 1946. In addition, sponsors of NSLP may also choose to offer School Breakfast and the After School Snack Programs.

These funds will assist school food authorities (SFAs) in purchasing equipment needed to serve healthier school meals, improve food safety, and expand access to school meals. SFAs must plan to utilize NSLP Equipment Assistance Grant funds on equipment that covers at least one of the following focus areas:

    • Equipment that improves the quality of school meals.
    • Equipment that improves the safety of food served in the school meal programs.
    • Equipment that improves the overall energy efficiency of the school food service operations.
    • Equipment used to improve or expand participation in the NSLP.

Note, additional consideration (priority) will be given to schools that have more than 50% of the students eligible for free/reduced price meals based on the March eligibility report. Additional consideration (priority) will also be given to SFAs that have not previously been awarded NSLP Equipment Assistance Grants.
