    Summary

    Oklahoma Humanities aims to improve the quality of humanities education and to bring people together with learning experiences that foster meaningful conversation and a deeper understanding of the human experience. Oklahoma Humanities grants encourage cultural programming on the local level across the state. Eligible projects must support the council's mission to strengthen communities by helping Oklahomans learn about the human experience, understand new perspectives, and participate knowledgeably in civic life.

    Successful projects should fall under at least one of the following grant categories. 
    1. The Human Experience - These projects explore culture and history through time and place;
    2. We the People - These projects explore cultural, ethnic, racial, or religious diversity; and/or
    3. The Public Square - These projects explore current events, divergent opinions, public policy, civics, or justice.

    The following types of grants are available:
    • Major Grants and Challenge Grants - support reading groups, lectures, exhibits, and other public programs which enrich the lives of Oklahomans of all ages right in their own communities;
    • Opportunity Grants - for the support of public programming in the humanities; and
    • Scholar Research Grants - to encourage and increase original humanities research by Oklahoma scholars.

    Additional Information

    Ineligible costs include:
    • Partisan objectives or advocacy;
    • Sponsoring or co-sponsoring organization employee salaries, operating costs, and construction;
    • Academic credit or institutional development;
    • Travel to professional meetings;
    • Academic scholarships and fellowships;
    • Museum or library acquisitions;
    • Creative arts performances, celebrations, or ceremonies unless accompanied by interpretation;
    • The teaching of technical skills unless accompanied by interpretation;
    • Publications, except those integral to programming;
    • Most projects not open to all segments of the public;
    • Profit-making or fund-raising activities;
    • Beverages, food, or entertainment for audiences;
    • Major equipment purchases (over $500);
    • Indirect costs (overhead);
    • Documentary film production costs (post-production costs may be considered;
    • First person historical reenactments not supported by scholarship; and
    • Conferences, symposia, or other programs not easily accessible to the general public, or programs not widely publicized.

  • Eligibility Details

    Any non-profit organization is eligible. Individuals may apply for Scholar Research Grants only. Scholars must be residents of Oklahoma or are employed in Oklahoma, including independent scholars with or without academic affiliations.
     

    Deadline Details

    Mandatory drafts for Major Grants and Challenge Grants must be submitted by March 1st for the Spring or by August 1st for the Fall, annually. Final applications for Major Grants and Challenge Grants must be submitted by April 1st for the Spring or September 1st for the Fall, annually.

    Applications for Opportunity Grants must be submitted at least 40 days before the start of the applicant's program.

    Applications for Scholar Research Grants must be submitted by December 15th, annually.

    Award Details

    Major Grants are up to $8,500 each. The maximum outright award is $5,000, but may be increased by $3,500 with the Matching Gifts program. Challenge Grants are up to $15,000 each; offers matching funds only, on a dollar-for-dollar basis, for gifts raised from eligible third-party donors. Opportunity Grants are up to $1,000 each. Scholar Research Grants are up to $500 each.
