    Summary

    The Volunteer Fire Assistance Grant Program provides financial and technical assistance to Montana fire departments in cities or communities with a population under 10,000. The primary objectives of the program are saving lives and protecting property in rural areas.

    Examples of approved projects include:

    • Fire protection organization and planning - This includes formation of a rural or volunteer fire district fire plans
    • Fire training - This includes Structural fire protection and Wildland fire protection
    • Fire equipment - This includes Communications systems; Conversion of excess military property; and New equipment purchases
    • Wildland personal protective equipment (PPE)

    Additional Information

    Normal operational expenses, maintenance expenses and construction or improvements to fire stations for housing fire equipment are not eligible to receive VFA funds.

  • Eligibility Details

    Eligible applicants are Montana fire departments serving a rural area or a rural community with a population of 10,000 or less. 

    Deadline Details

    Applications were to be submitted by May 17, 2020. A similar deadline is anticipated annually. 

    Award Details

    Individual award amounts vary.  Cost sharing/matching of 50% the total project cost is required.
