Employee Matching Gifts
The foundation matches contributions made by employees and directors of U.S. Steel to institutions of higher education on a one-for-one basis and 50 cents to the dollar to nonprofit organizations involved with private secondary education, special education, arts and culture, the environment, and the American Red Cross. Matching gifts range from $50 to $10,000 per contributor, per year.
U.S. Steel Endowed Scholarships
The foundation supports endowed scholarships at selected universities. The scholarships are available to entering first-year students who have been accepted for full-time study toward a baccalaureate degree in a business-related major such as (but not limited to) engineering, accounting, finance, computer science, business, or natural sciences. Preference will be given to students who are children of employees of U.S. Steel. Scholarships are administered by selected universities.
U.S. Steel Scholarship Program
The foundation annually awards renewable $2,500 college scholarships to children of employees of U.S. Steel. The program is administered by Scholarship America, Inc.
Eligibility Details
Please note that United States Steel Foundation support is restricted to organizations and programs operating within the United States. Giving is primarily located in areas of company operations, with an emphasis on AL, IL, IN, and PA.
Deadline Details
The Foundation operates on a fiscal year that runs from December 1 - November 30. Organizations may only submit one grant application per year. All determinations are made by the Foundation’s screening committee and Board of Trustees, who meet twice per year – in July and November. Please see the Foundation's website for the specific submission dates based upon funding focus; however, generally the dates fall around the following times:
- Education Scholarships - April 15
- Education Capital & Operating - April 15
- Public, Cultural, and Scientific Affairs - June 1
- Safety, Health and Human Services - June 1
When completing the online application, you will be asked to provide the following:
- Signature and title of chief executive officer
- Copy of IRS Determination Letter
- Brief history of organization and description of its mission
- Copy of most recent annual report/audited financial statement/990
- Listing of board of directors, trustees, officers and other key people and their affiliations
- Detailed description of project and amount of funding requested
- Copy of current year's organizational budget and/or project budget
- Listing of additional sources and amount of support
