    Summary

    The Dorothea Haus Ross Foundation is focused on several populations of particularly vulnerable children and also supports organizations that enable entrepreneurs to build sustainable economic communities for their children and families. The foundation notes the overlap and diversity of these program areas and do, on occasion, support organizations whose work may be in an allied or supporting area. Many of the programs supported by the Foundation focus on ensuring that children are safe and have access to education and care, including:

    • Trafficked and Exploited Children: The foundation partners with organizations that work to prevent child trafficking, secure the release of children from their captivity and provide shelter, care and rehabilitation. Trafficked and Exploited Children Program Targets:
      • Prevention/Public Education Awareness
      • Rescue/Safety/Care
      • Education/Rehabilitation
      • Inclusion/Long Term Care Solutions
      • Community-based Anti-child marriage Initiatives
    • Disabled Children: The foundation partners with organizations that provide health care, emotional support, education and training, and that promote dignity and facilitate the child's active and full inclusion and participation in their home, school and community. Disabled Children program targets:
      • Community-based Rehabilitation
      • De-institutionalization and strengthening of Family and Community-Based Care Models
      • Education to Reach Full Potential
      • School and Community Inclusion
      • Creation of local capacity to provide assistive, mobility and prosthetic devices
    • Displaced and Refugee Children: The foundation partners with organizations that provide housing, stability and education to children to help them survive the difficult and dislocating conditions in which they are forced to live. Displaced and Refugee Children program targets:
      • Safety/Housing
      • Stability/Play
      • Development of focused PTSD and other treatment programs 
      • Education/Expedited Curriculum/Vocational Training
      • Family re-unification for unaccompanied minors  
    • Sustainable Economic Communities: The foundation partners with a very limited number of community based organizations that empower village-level entrepreneurs to provide a sustainable livelihood for their families and which strengthen the fabric of community health and education. Sustainable Communities program targets:
      • Model programs of village level and entrepreneur-led economic development
      • Focus on vulnerable communities and families, specifically refugees, adolescent girls, indigenous, and families with disabled children.

    Additional Information

    The Foundation does not fund orphanages or other types of homes that benefit only the children that live within them, nor does the Foundation fund schools that only benefit the children that attend them. Only on rare occasions, and after much discussion, does the Foundation fund such institutions when they are developing a program model intended to replicated at other institutions and have benefit to children beyond their specific institution.

    In addition, the Foundation does not fund:

    • Grants to non-US organizations or any organization that does not have proof of current IRS tax-exempt status.
    • Grants, scholarships or loans to individuals.
    • Grants to private foundations.
    • Grants that are inconsistent with an organization's charitable purposes.
    • Grants that seek to support political activities or attempt to influence specific legislation through direct lobbying.
    • Grants for doctoral study or research.
    • Grants for sponsorship of, or travel to, conferences or events.
    • Grants for films, videos or publications.
    • Donations to annual campaigns or fundraising events.

  • Eligibility Details

    The Ross Foundation provides financial assistance to organizations that are tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the United States Internal Revenue Code.

    Deadline Details

    Applications are accepted throughout the year. Initial approach should be through a Letter of Intent. Full proposals are accepted on an invitation only basis.

    Award Details

    Grants are typically between $25,000 and $50,000. The Foundation does occasionally make larger and smaller grants. Multi-year funding is occasionally made, but is structured on the completion of set milestones and measured outcomes.
