    Summary

Speeding related fatalities and injuries continues to be a serious problem for the Connecticut Department of Transportation and the law enforcement community. As noted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, speed is involved in about one out of three fatal crashes. Historically, strong High Visibility Enforcement (HVE) efforts integrated with targeted media campaigns have proven to be most effective in creating change in public behavior. This program will address steps to reduce speed related injuries on Connecticut’s rural roads.

The objectives of this problem are:

    • To reduce the number of crashes, injuries, and fatalities from speed, through increased high-visibility speed enforcement activities.
    • To communicate with the public, through media venues, so drivers will realize the risks and consequences of operating a vehicle at high speeds and therefore deter that behavior.

This is a federally reimbursable program.
